The Makeup Show Chicago 2016: Recap and Haul

If you follow me on Snapchat or Instagram  you would know that I had the opportunity to attend The Makeup Show Chicago last weekend (and if you’re not following me you really missed out). I’ve attended The Makeup Show once before as an artist but this my first year attending as a blogger. I swear this show just keeps getting better and better each year. This year the show was hosted in a new venue, there were more vendors than ever, and some amazing speakers and educators.

One perk of attending as a blogger is that we kicked off the show with a super inspiring “press preview” with James Vincent. James is an OG in the beauty industry and I really love him because he’s always championing for more diversity and inclusion of WOC in the beauty industry. Another perk that I can’t over look is the amazing swag bags we received, more on that later. I felt like I was on an episode of “James’ Favorite Things” because James basically spoiled us with a ton of his faves.

Michelle and TayeI also got to spend the day with my beauty boo, Taylor of She basically may partner in crime for these kinds of events!

There were so many vendors at the show from popular brands that sell in Sephora like Makeup Forever, NARS, and Kat Von D to smaller indie brands that are harder to get your hands on like Danessa Myricks, Cozzette, and AJ Crimson. Personally, I love getting to meet the artists behind these smaller indie brands and to touch and play with the products.

I got to meet and chat with Roque Cozzette, the artist behind his self titled brand “Cozzette“. He was so fun and friendly. I’m sure you’ve seen their gorgeous purple brushes all over instagram or in your favorite YouTuber’s videos. I got to play with his “Infinite Eyeshadows” and they are AMAZING! My faves were the “crystal” finish shadows. They’re so shiny and metallic that they almost looks wet. Roque also gave me a little sneak peak of some new products he’s releasing in 2017, a highlight-contour palette and a blush palette. I couldn’t take any pics but I promise you the shades are so brown girl friendly!

The new location for this years show, Revel Fulton Market, was beautiful but I do feel like there are still a few kinks that needed to be worked out. The space is huge but somehow I still felt cramped and it was hard to navigate between booths due to the crowding. I wish there would have been more or better lighting in some areas. I found it very hard to shop for makeup with all the weird color lighting.

I attended a few of the seminars lead by the brand educators at the show. I always love these demos because I can learn new techniques and how to use all of the new products that the brands release.

Nicholas Lujan, an artist and educator with Makeup Forever did the most beautiful demo if skin techniques I’ve ever seen. One key tip I took away from pretty much every artist this year is that skin prep is KEY!! Hydrate and moisturize your skin as much as possible, with creams, masks, and serums, for the best makeup application. I’ll be stocking up on sheet masks for sure!
